The Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF), and national partner espnW, announced in April 2015 that Environmental Charter Middle School – Gardena and RAMP Tennis – Carson partnership is a 2015 recipient of a “Sports 4 Life” grant. Sports 4 Life is a national effort to increase the participation and retention of girls in youth sports programs.
The link between sports participation and the prevention of chronic diseases, like diabetes, obesity, depression and cardiovascular diseases is well-established. By making sports more accessible, Sports 4 Life gives young females the chance to learn the foundational benefits of sports, such as leadership, confidence, self-esteem, and perseverance.
Environmental Charter Middle School – Gardena provides the ECMS Tennis: RAMP IT UP GIRL program to girls ages 11-14 in the Los Angeles area. Their goal is to expose young, underserved African-American and Latina girls to the sport of tennis in the hopes that they will adopt tennis as a life-long sport. ECMS also stresses the importance of academics and supports their young girls’ education through a Girls Mentor program. ECMS truly fosters the four pillars of Sports 4 Life through their support of academics and fostering of a healthy, positive environment where girls can improve upon their confidence and self-esteem.
“The Foundation believes in the transformative power of sports, be it learning how to live a healthy life, how to be a leader or how to work in a team, and is committed to expanding access to sports for girls in diverse communities.”
– Angela Hucles, WSF president and two-time Olympic and World Cup medalist in soccer
